Orthodontics treatment is for life!

If you don’t keep wearing your retainer your straightened teeth could go wonky again

If we were to conduct our own survey and ask the public how long they thought a typical orthodontics treatment took, the majority of people we questioned would probably say “about two-years”. After all, they may have experienced themselves, or at least know people who have been fitted with orthodontics braces and two years is roughly the length of time it takes to correct the position of crooked, misaligned or crowded teeth in order to help achieve a lovely smile. What most people either don’t realise … or choose to ignore … is that if, after the treatment, the nighttime retainers that are provided are not routinely worn – then their teeth will once again start to slip out of position. This is not only our view because recently the British Orthodontics Society reminded everyone that teeth are able to move throughout life and they can slip out of position even after they have been straightened. They also stated that unless patients continue to wear their retainer after the conclusion of their orthodontics treatment the chances are that they will once again have crooked teeth. In fact, the Society reported: ‘Around 70 percent of patients who wore braces needed further treatment 10-years later’.The simple message is … if you do not wear your retainer as directed by your orthodontist your teeth will go crooked again and all that hard work will be lost!At Carisbrook we have a specialist Orthodontist department staffed by a highly-qualified team who can offer a range of treatments to help you improve the appearance of your teeth, your smile and your self-confidence. Each case is unique and is individually assessed before we recommend the type of treatment required. Among the different orthodontics treatments we can offer are: Lingual Braces that fit at the back of your teeth so they cannot be seen. Invisalign Braces are another option and not only are these clear braces very discreet, but they can also be removed when you are socialising or eating. We can also offer Removable Braces and Clear Braces depending on your lifestyle. While of course the Fixed Braces, that have been massively improved, are yet a further option.Whichever orthodontics treatment braces we recommend we always remind patients that one thing is certain. At the end of the treatment, when we have helped you to achieve that lovely smile you’ve always wanted, we will provide a removable retainer that we recommend you should wear every night in order to prevent your teeth going wonky again. If you would like to discuss any aspect of orthodontics treatment with our specialist orthodontics team or if you are worried that your ‘straightened’ teeth may be in danger of relapse then please do not hesitate to contact us.
