Repair your smile with inlays and onlays
Inlays and onlays can be a suitable alternative to crowns and fillings when repairing damaged teeth. They can be made of a variety of different materials such as gold, porcelain and composite.
- A seamless repair with natural-looking results
- Strong, durable and long-lasting
- Prevent the need for more extensive treatment
What to expect at your dental check-up
Your dentist may recommend an inlay or onlay when teeth are broken down or when the existing filling is too large to repair with a new filling. This is because if a filling is too large, it has a higher chance of failure.
Inlays sit inside the tooth, filling the hole prepared after the removal of decay. Onlays fill the hole and lie on top of the tooth’s surface, recreating the shape of the tooth and providing extra strength when the decay is more extensive.
Treating damage and decay with an inlay or an onlay can help save the remaining healthy tooth structure. This in turn can help to avoid the need for further - and often more expensive - treatment, such as a dental crown.
The treatment process
Dental inlays and onlays are made in a dental laboratory so require two visits to our Manchester practice.
At your first appointment, the tooth is prepared for the restorative and impressions are sent to the lab for the inlay/onlay to be made. During your second appointment, the inlay/onlay is ready to be fitted and is attached to the tooth using specialised dental adhesive.
