It’s the cold, cold story
What to do if the winter chill affects sensitive teeth
The past few days have seen the first of this winter’s icy weather with a cold snap that is predicted to last for some time yet. It could be a foretaste of what is in store for us and for many people the cold air has been a painful reminder that they have sensitive teeth. If this applies to you then you don’t have to suffer in silence because there are a number of steps you can take to alleviate the discomfort. Being sensible … not sensitive … is the motto. Many people react to sensitive teeth whenever they sip a very cold or very hot drink, but breathing in icy air can also have the same effect and when it does it can be most uncomfortable … not to mention painful. In actual fact, there are a number of reasons why cold air can affect teeth in this way and why teeth can become sensitive to exposure to either hot or cold temperatures. Depending on the cause there are also a number of treatments that we recommend. Here are the three main causes and remedies for sensitive teeth:Gum recession. It is not uncommon for the gum line to recede and expose more of the tooth’s root. This is especially true as we grow older. The problem is that the root is more sensitive because it does not have the same amount of enamel protection as the upper part of the tooth. There is a treatment though and that is to brush your teeth using a ‘Toothpaste for Sensitive teeth’ twice a day. We also recommend that you use a brush that has a medium or soft bristle – not a hard one and do not brush too aggressively. If you are worried about sensitive teeth do not hesitate to make an appointment to see your dentist. The tooth may be dying. As a tooth begins to die it will become more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. Alternatively, the tooth may have a small hole or cavity or the start of tooth decay that is allowing the cold air to penetrate and cause pain. To check whether this is the case you should make an appointment to let your dentist examine your teeth. If there is a cavity or signs of tooth decay your dentist can mend it with a white filling or maybe they could repair it using a specially made crown that will not only put an end to the problem of sensitive teeth but it will also restore the appearance of your smile. You could have a cracked tooth. Sometimes you may not even be aware that one of your teeth is cracked and this is often caused by grinding your teeth while you are asleep, which can also wear away the enamel. Another cause of sensitive teeth. We often find that sensitive teeth pain is caused by a tiny crack. If it is then you definitely require treatment and you should visit your dentist. We can repair the tooth using a white filling, an onlay or a crown and as a further precaution, we can also provide a specially made mouth guard to prevent further damage by grinding your teeth at night.Sensitive teeth can be a major problem, especially in weather conditions such as now.
