Taking good care of our nervous patients
How we use dental sedation to eliminate all the anxiety and stress of going to the dentist
Dental phobia is far more common than most people think and it is nothing to be ashamed of. At Carisbrook Dental we not only recognise that a visit to the dentist can be a very stressful experience for many patients, but we have taken positive action to ease these concerns and we employ the very latest and most effective dental sedation solutions to help calm and relax even the most nervous patients.
As a matter of fact, we take nervous patients’ concerns so seriously that we can offer not just a single choice of dental sedation, but we can provide patients with a number of fully proven options, including flavoured inhalation sedation performed by our resident child specialist, that has been specially developed to relax younger children.
Don’t worry, you won’t have to choose which is the best dental sedation solution for yourself, because our highly qualified and highly experienced dentists and dental hygiene team will be right there for you and will advise you on what is the most appropriate dental sedation solution.
The options we have are for oral or intravenous (IV) sedation. Whichever we recommend though you can be assured that the dental sedation will be extremely effective in helping to calm your nerves and enabling you to relax during your visit and throughout your treatment. Not only that, but they’re so good you’ll probably remember very little about your treatment.
If we advise oral sedation it involves taking a tablet the night before you visit us and then another one about an hour before your appointment. By the time you arrive at our clinic you will feel calm and relaxed and will not be nervous about your treatment. Oral sedation is ideal for mild cases of anxiety.
IV sedation involves an injection into the back of your hand. We use a fully proven dental sedation called Midazolam. IV dental sedation is usually recommended for patients who are undergoing more complex dental treatment.
Dr Idrees is fully trained in delivering dental sedation and we also have a specialist anaesthetist available to help in the most complex cases.
For young children, we recommend inhalation sedation, which is a light, fragrant sedative that helps to relax them during treatment. Sometimes this is also known as ‘Happy Gas’, so it is a pleasant experience for the youngster. It is not a general anaesthetic.
There is an important point to make for patients who are taking dental sedation. You will be fully conscious throughout the treatment and you will be able to communicate with us. You’ll simply feel very calm and relaxed. If you have had dental sedation you must have someone to drive you home and you must not drink alcohol or go back to work after your treatment.
One final point. The dental sedation we use is safe and predictable; our aim however is to create a strong bond of trust and confidence between our patients and dental staff so that eventually we can wean you off the need for dental sedation.
If you class yourself as a nervous patient then please do not hesitate to discuss your concerns with our staff. We will be able to reassure you and will help you undergo your treatment without nerves, stress or anxiety.
