Easter Eggstravagance!
Bury dentist warns of the risks of over-indulgence on children’s teeth
It’s Easter weekend coming up and for most children that means only one-thing … lots of Easter Eggs to enjoy. We know only too well that the more eggs they receive they more they’ll eat and with so many of today’s chocolate eggs now also stuffed with sweets, toffees and such, it means many children will be non-stop binging on sugar-laden snacks. As a leading Bury dentist, at Carisbrook we beseech parents to ‘please try to ration your little one’s sugar intake’. Otherwise they could so easily find themselves becoming yet another statistic in the country’s depressing surge of very young children who are now having to have teeth extracted.[caption id="attachment_4067" align="aligncenter" width="416"]
Bury Dentist[/caption]We certainly don’t want to be spoilsports and we would never attempt to deprive youngsters of their annual Easter Egg treats. But we have seen the damage that too much sugar and sweet fizzy drinks can do to young teeth and all it takes is a little common sense and a few sensible precautions to avoid these wholly preventable dental problems. As a busy Bury dentist, we are passionate about protecting children‘s teeth and we urge every parent to simply hold back some of the sweet treats that children will receive this weekend. Please be firm and ration their sugar consumption and if you haven’t yet taught your children the importance of regularly brushing their teeth – then please take a look at our Children page and do it now!Even though many parents may believe that losing milk teeth is not such a problem because new ones will grow anyway, the reality is that baby teeth serve as a guide for their second teeth and if they are not there then when the new teeth come through they can grow crooked and out of position causing major dental problems in later life.As a leading Bury dentist we always pass on a list of good dental advice to all parents:
- Always clean teeth as soon as they get up in a morning and again last thing before they go to bed at night.
- Parents must do this for young children until they are old enough to be taught how to brush teeth properly. Our Children page has some really good advice and videos to help.
- Always use a good fluoride toothpaste and don’t rinse the mouth afterwards. You will only rinse away the fluoride protection.
- Ration children’s access to sugary sweets, snacks and drinks – especially fizzy sweet drinks in order to reduce the risk of tooth decay.
- Remember that many fruits and especially dried fruits contain huge amounts of sugar.
- At bedtime give children a drink of milk, clean their teeth and do not allow them to have a fruit drink to take to bed.
- Encourage children not to snack all day.
- Establish a good oral health routine, which as well as thorough brushing, means regular visits to the dentist. If there are any problems developing the dentist can spot them early enough to take appropriate action.
So please, do your best to limit the amount of Easter Eggs and the accompanying sweets your children consume. Remember … by rationing the treats they will also be able to enjoy them for much longer. If you are in any way concerned about the health of your children’s teeth then please contact us to arrange a FREE CONSULTATION.
