Neglect your teeth and endanger your life
Wow! That statement sounds unbelievable doesn’t it, but that was the message from doctors on the recent BBC Television ‘The Truth About … Your Teeth’ programmes. If you recall we flagged up these programmes a couple of weeks or so ago and recommended that if possible you watched them. We have to say that the information they provided was truly eye-opening.For instance, the scientists behind the programmes proved that neglecting oral hygiene and not brushing your teeth almost inevitably led to gum disease. As a consequence the resultant infection and inflammation can damage the body’s entire immune system … and that is strongly linked to the development of illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, stroke and cancer. As they said, “Gum disease isn’t just bad for your teeth, it shortens your life – simple as that!”The programmes proved what we at Carisbrook Dental, the dentists Manchester specialists, have been saying for years; getting in to the habit of brushing your teeth properly, at least twice a day, is a vital discipline that will benefit not just your oral health … but also your whole body’s well-being.Brushing your teeth properly means using a good fluoride based toothpaste and a good medium bristle toothbrush. Spend about 30-seconds on each quarter of the mouth using a light, circular motion. Don’t forget though that brushing only reaches about sixty per cent of the teeth’s surface, which means that forty per cent is not being cleaned, so we recommend you also floss and/or use an inter-dental brush. After you’ve finished cleaning your teeth don’t rinse your mouth because you really want to leave as much fluoride protection on your teeth for as long as possible. What else do we advise? Without question our best advice is to visit a dentist regularly. At Carisbrook we recommend that patients make an appointment to see a dentist or hygienist at least every six months for a simple examination to ensure that everything is in order and that there are no underlying problems that are likely to arise. If we do spot a potential problem then we can generally fix it with the minimum of treatment required. If, on the other hand, you know that you are suffering from a dental problem then please don’t worry because our highly experienced dental team can almost certainly help you, whether it requires restorative dentistry or preventative dentistry treatment. We can also help you if you have damaged or missing teeth with our dental implant solutions, crowns, bridges or dentures and if you have crooked or misaligned teeth then our orthodontics Manchester team is there to help.If you would like to make an appointment to visit either our dentists or hygienists please don’t hesitate to call us on 0161 951 7295 or reach us via our contact page.Don’t let your teeth endanger your health!
